In late October 2012 Blood Bikes East completed its first medical transport. In the intervening years we have worked with our growing list of Dublin hospitals to deliver an efficient, professional and above all 100% free medical transport service. The call rates grew slowly at first, but then in 2014 something incredible began to happen and it hasn’t stopped since.
That means that before the end of January 2017 we had completed 8,500 transports…
So, on bank holiday Monday, the 7th of August, 2017, BBE completed our 10,000th medical transport!
It was fitting that it was between two facilities on our busiest route, with a pickup from St. Columcille’s to St. Vincent’s Pathology Labs. The call was answered by our Controller on duty, Paul McCann and completed by John Graham, a relatively new volunteer and accompanied by Phil Kelly, one of our longest serving volunteers. We are obviously grateful to Paul and both John and Phil for their service yesterday.
Commenting on this momentous occasion, John Graham said
“It was a pleasure to contribute to the previous 9,999th runs, and an honour to complete the run alongside a rider from the very beginning. Thanks Phil and here’s to the next 10,000.”
Phil Kelly added
“It’s been my pleasure to have played a part in the 9,999 calls up to yesterday. But it was humbling to be asked to accompany the rider carrying the 10,000th. Back in 2012 we had an 01 Deauville, which everyone tried to avoid riding, but we did anyway. Yesterday I had the pleasure of accompanying John on a 171 Kawasaki. We have gone from being the second Blood Bike Group in the country to now being the largest and busiest group in the country. Well done John Graham but also well done to everyone else involved from the original idea in 2011 through to our launch in 2012 and right on to today where riders have already started knocking down the numbers to our next 10,000th call.”
Current Chairman, Patrick Crawford concluded the comments
“I am proud, as I know every volunteer is, to be part of such a committed and professional organisation. We may be volunteers, but we hold our service up to the highest levels of scrutiny and deliver a service that our hospitals rely on to make a difference to their service and patients.”
But we must also thank every volunteer that has been a part of this amazing service throughout the years. Some are no longer volunteers as circumstances naturally change, people move, etc. But every single person should feel proud of the part they played in helping our hospitals to help more people. This is especially true of our previous Chairman, Pat McCabe, who’s vision and hard work was instrumental in making this a reality.
In the last 10,000 calls we have delivered thousands of samples and results, many hundreds of patient data discs, thousands of litres of donor milk, hundreds of packets of urgent medication and even a few heart valves and corneas for transplant and cranial stents for emergency surgery.
